TDS in the aquarium is the estimated sum of dissolved substances in aquarium water; it does not replace the measurement of GH, KH or individual ions.

What does TDS in the aquarium mean in practice?

The measurement quickly detects the change in total ions between replacements, but does not indicate whether calcium, nitrates, sodium or any other component has increased.

When does it matter?

Constant TDS may hide changes in ion ratios, therefore it is not a substitute for GH, KH and nitrogen compound tests.

Which solutions are related to it?

It is used as a trend indicator for a constant mineralization pattern and supplemented with stock-specific tests.
