What does contact time mean in practice?
EBCT is calculated as the void volume divided by the flow, but actual contact is reduced by channeling and dead zones.
When does it matter?
Too short a time limits adsorption, exchange or reaction even if the device does not show a large pressure drop.

The volume of the medium increases or the flow decreases and ensures correct distribution across the entire cross-section.
