What does nitrifying bacteria mean in practice?
They grow slowly on the surface of the bed, requiring oxygen, appropriate pH, alkalinity and time to settle the system.
When does it matter?
Chlorine, hypoxia or a sudden change in load can inhibit the process and cause an increase in ammonium or nitrite.
Which solutions are related to it?
Flow, oxygen and buffer are maintained, biocides are avoided and NH4+, NO2− and NO3− are monitored.
