Description
Purolite C 100E is a polystyrene, strongly acidic cation exchange resin with a gel structure, supplied in sodium form. The resin exchanges calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions, making the water soft, and is used, among other things, in water softeners for the whole house.
Purolite C-100E is insoluble in diluted or moderately concentrated acids, bases, and all typical solvents; however, exposure to significant amounts of free chlorine, hypochlorite ions, or other strong oxidizing agents causes gradual degradation of the structure by disrupting the cross-linking. The consequence is a decrease in the exchange capacity of the resin and a deterioration of its physical properties.
Like all conventional cross-linked polystyrene-type resins, it is thermally more stable in sodium, calcium, and magnesium forms than in hydrogen form and is then resistant to temperatures up to 150°C. In hydrogen form, the resin slowly undergoes autohydrolysis with a loss of capacity at temperatures above 120°C. It can be used at higher temperatures, but a shortened operational lifespan should be considered. The resin can operate in the demineralization process as well as in softening.
This cation exchange resin can be used in typical 10-inch filters in the form of a cartridge from a can for interchangeable fillings or can also be used with a disassemblable reusable filter, such as a linear filter for osmosis. This resin can be applied in domestic and industrial water softening devices. Due to the additional purification process used in production, it can be used in installations for softening drinking water or water that comes into contact with food. When the bed is exhausted and hardness-causing ions enter the effluent, the capacity is renewed through regeneration with hydrochloric acid or a rock salt solution. Purolite C-100E meets the requirements of the U.S. Food and Drugs Code of Federal Regulations and the requirements of EU member countries.
