What does COD mean in practice?
A standardized test chemically oxidizes a wide range of substances and provides equivalent oxygen consumption.
When does it matter?
COD usually exceeds BOD, but does not tell you how much of the load is biodegradable or which compounds are present.

They are used to monitor wastewater and processes, keeping the same method and taking into account possible chloride interference.
